VSA / AVETRA Conference Scholarships - Now Open

The Victorian Skills Authority (VSA) and AVETRA are excited to invite scholarship applications from eligible early career researchers as part of our shared commitment to develop and support applied research capacity and capability in the VET sector.

Two VSA-AVETRA scholarships will be provided to Victorian early career VET researchers (or researchers who focus on VET as their subject matter, or practitioners seeking to transition to more research-focused roles) to attend the 2026 AVETRA Conference (to be held in Brisbane on 23-24 April 2026).

Each scholarship package will include a financial component of $2,500 plus a ticket to the conference and in-kind contributions from AVETRA.

DETAILS

Scholarship recipients will each receive $2,500 to cover travel and other costs associated with attending the conference. They will each also receive a ticket to AVETRA’s 2026 annual conference.
Through consultation between AVETRA and the scholarship recipients, additional opportunities for capability development may be created, such as:
Dedicated one-on-one meeting time at the conference with a leading researcher, AVETRA member or conference speaker
Opportunity to participate in a panel discussion at a future AVETRA conference
Support in preparing an abstract for a future AVETRA conference
The preparation of a short reflective piece on the conference for a future edition of the AVETRA magazine, Research Today
Support in preparing an abstract for a future edition of Research Today.
Funds will be paid as an up-front lump sum and scholarship recipients will be responsible for making their own travel and accommodation bookings.

ELIGIBILITY

To apply for a VSA – AVETRA Scholarship you must:

Be a paid up AVETRA member
Be an early career researcher or VET practitioner researcher, researching VET or VET-aligned issues
Be an Australian citizen or have Australian work rights
Live and work in Victoria

CONDITIONS

Within 4 weeks of attending the conference, scholarship recipients commit to providing a written reflective report back to the VSA and AVETRA covering:

Your key highlights / takeaways from the conference
How attendance at the conference has / will shape your research practice
How you have started to share your learnings from the conference with your peers / colleagues.
Your report may – by agreement – form the basis of a paper for AVETRA’s Research Today magazine.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applicants must complete the application form HERE and provide the following information:

Evidence of meeting the eligibility criteria
A reflective written piece covering:

Your research career / research trajectory to date
Evidence of research activity and dissemination
How your research / research practice would benefit from attending the conference
How you intend to disseminate what you learn at the conference to your peers and colleagues.

Applications will close at COB on Wednesday 15 April 2026.

Applications will be judged by representatives of VSA and AVETRA, against the published criteria. No further correspondence will be entered into.

Successful applicants will be notified by Friday 17 April 2026.

Calling all AVETRA members, VET researchers and stakeholders!

Share your research with your colleagues and peers through AVETRA’s Research Today magazine.

AVETRA is Australasia's only national, independent association of researchers in vocational education and training (VET). Amongst the range of services AVETRA offers, we produce VET research publications including Research Today – an electronic magazine that shares and celebrates VET practitioner research. This may be research about VET or research and innovation with and for VET’s industry and community partners.

Guidelines:

Articles should be of around 1000-1500 words and on topics of interest to AVETRA members and the wider VET community (including researchers, academics, VET practitioners and other stakeholders).
Articles on VET practitioner-led and applied research are especially welcome.
Articles should include the aims of the research, how information was collected, and key findings.
If you refer to academic literature, your piece should include the references and a reference list.
If you refer to information owned by your industry or community partner, it is vital that the partner has granted permission for you to submit your article.
The addition of diagrams or a picture is also welcome.

Those preparing their first article may find the attached guide, useful.

Contributions are due by Friday 8 May 2026.

Nominations are open for the AVETRA Journal Article of the Year Award 2026, for journal articles authored by an AVETRA member and published in the previous year. Please find a link to the nominations form, below.

The aim of this award is to recognise excellent scholarship on the part of an AVETRA member, and to help to raise the profile of the scholarly work being done by AVETRA members.

This ongoing award is presented annually at the AVETRA conference. The awardee will receive a certificate from AVETRA.

The Australian Disability Clearinghouse on Education and Training (ADCET), in partnership with the University of Tasmania, invites you to join us for the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Symposium 2026: From Ideas to Impact: Sharing, Engaging, and Co-Designing Practice.

Taking place from Wednesday 24 June to Friday 26 June 2026 at the University of Tasmania in Hobart, the symposium brings together academics, educators, practitioners and people with disability from across the Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training sectors. The Australian Vocational Education and Training Research Association (AVETRA) aims to promote quality VET research, build capacity to undertake VET research and evaluation, and provide opportunities to exchange information and ideas. VET research may be on a small or large scale, for policy development, to improve teaching and assessment practices or to discover which partnerships, programs and services best meet the needs of the individuals, communities, and enterprises. AVETRA members include TAFE and university-based researchers, training managers, industry-based trainers and managers, and VET decision makers. The annual conference aims to be informative, challenging, and practical and assist people to build networks.

Nominations are now open for the 2026 Berwyn Clayton Award for Practitioner Research.

AVETRA members are invited to nominate an early career or practitioner researcher whose research is making a positive impact when applied to VET practice.

Berwyn Clayton is a legend in the Australian VET research scene and has a long and distinguished association with AVETRA. From 1989 to 2014 Berwyn actively encouraged and supported VET teachers to undertake research.

AVETRA has presented the Berwyn Clayton Award on a bi-annual basis at the AVETRA Conference since 2012. Over the years, the criteria for this award have changed, reflecting the broad impact that Berwyn has had on our sector.

In 2026, the Berwyn Clayton Award will again be awarded to a Practitioner Researcher.

All nominees and those nominating them must be current AVETRA members.

This is a call for nominations to participate on the AVETRA Executive Committee.

All AVETRA members are invited to nominate for the next two year term of the AVETRA executive. Serving on the executive team is an opportunity to help shape the association's future direction, to inform the activities and events the association enables for members and to contribute to the sustainability of our VET research community. We encourage members from across the community to nominate, including practitioner and early career researchers, and VET researchers based in industry, VET providers and universities.

We strongly encourage nominations from individuals who bring diverse perspectives and experiences to our VET research community, in particular First Nations researchers, researchers with lived experience of disability, researchers living and/or working in rural and remote areas and researchers from language backgrounds other than English.

To nominate, nominees need to be financial members of AVETRA and be supported by two (2) financial members and completed via the nomination form below, and received by the AVETRA Secretary (avetra@avetra.org.au) no later than 26th February 2026.

Applied Research grants focused on the Care Economy, early-career researchers, and vital SME-led projects. Deadline: 17 December.

Applications are officially open for the Applied Research and Innovation Grants in Round 2!

We are calling for high-impact project proposals that directly address challenges and foster innovation within the Care Economy, in mandatory partnership with an SME (Small to Medium Enterprise). This round specifically targets new and early-career researchers.

Key Details:

Grant Value: $50,000 to $100,000 per grant.
Project Duration: Projects must be completed within 6 to 12 months. The final project duration is contingent on the scope, complexity, and funding requested, with the official start date set upon the execution of the funding agreement.
Core Eligibility: Must be a Victorian TAFE professional/staff and an early-career researcher

Mandatory Requirement: Evidence of SME collaboration and commitment.

FOCUS OF THIS RESEARCH INSIGHT
The Victorian Skills Authority (VSA) is seeking to commission a research team / researcher to provide research insights about opportunities to develop and apply different approaches to ‘recognition of prior learning’ in the vocational education and training system. Recognition of prior learning (RPL) refers to the process of assessing someone’s relevant prior learning and existing skills to grant formal recognition. The process of RPL is accepted by the Australian Qualifications Framework and regulated under the Standards for RTOs, but a range of barriers exist (for employers, learners and institutions alike) that can limit the application of RPL in practice.

To submit an EOI for this project, please read the the research brief and use the EOI template provided. Expressions of interest are due by Wednesday 12th February 2025.

These and other questions are answered in a series of workshops offered by Holmesglen’s Centre for Applied Research and Innovationfor its OctoberVET offering.

In 2024 Holmesglen Institute is offering a novel approach to OctoberVET. Scheduled over four weeks, we are offering a range of workshops on practical issues related to applied research: developing research proposals; surveying the literature; choosing a methodology and methods and communicating your research.

They are intended to for all researchers in VET who are either currently engaged in applied research or innovation or who are thinking about doing research for the first time.

The workshops are hybrid and can be attended via Zoom or in person at the Chadstone Campus, Holmesglen Institute, Library Building, Workshop Room A

Title: Researching for VET policy and practice: insights from the AVETRA-VSA partnership projects

AVETRA has been engaged by the Victorian Skills Authority (VSA), an Administrative Office of the Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions for a two-year programme to commission Australian VET researchers to produce ‘Research Insights’. These Research Insights will translate findings and evidence from existing research into critical policy facing outputs. This webinar will feature a panel of researchers who have led the first three projects completed as part of the partnership. The panel will share key learnings from their projects and share reflections on the experience of working in partnership with government to prepare research insights that speak to implications for VET policy and policymaking.

VSA - AVETRA Scholarship Winners Announced

Recently, we called for applications for the inaugural AVETRA Conference Scholarships, offered by Victorian Skills Authority and AVETRA. We are pleased to announce that the two scholarships have been awarded to:

Emily Barter

Emily is a PhD candidate at Melbourne University, focussing her research on the experiences and impact of compliance on new VET teachers in Victorian TAFEs. She has many years of experience in the VET sector and in roles that intersect with it. Emily’s hopes her research will elevate the voice of VET teachers and increase knowledge relating to new VET teachers and compliance.

Vikki Millar

Vicki is a PhD candidate at CQ University and works as a VET Specialist at Deakin University. Her research aims to understand how space can improve outcomes for students impacted by trauma. Vicki draws from her prior roles within TAFE and VET and her current engagements with VET, schools, students and teachers.

Congratulations, Emily and Vikki!

Thank you to all those who applied for the scholarships. We were impressed by the calibre of the researchers who applied and the diversity of their research activity.

These VSA – AVETRA scholarships are another dimension of the flourishing relationship between the two organisations, committed to supporting early career researchers.

The Victorian Skills Authority (VSA) in partnership with AVETRA is seeking to commission a research team / researcher to provide research insights about the impact of the changing needs of the VET student cohort on the VET teaching and learning workforce, and the individual, institutional and sectoral approaches being implemented to support the VET workforce in their engagement with learners.

This project aims to provide policymakers with a high-level overview of the ways in which the VET student needs may be changing and the contextual factors that may be impacting this (i.e. a representation of the current state). The project will critically also provide a reflection on how the changing needs of the student cohort may impact on (1) the knowledge, capabilities and dispositions needed by VET teachers (2) the workload of VET teachers, and (3) the institutional support systems needed by VET teachers.

It will inform the development of the Victorian VET Workforce Strategy (Action 9 of the 2022 into 2023 Victorian Skills Plan) by identifying strategies that support the VET teaching and learning workforce to manage the range of student needs they are now facing and are likely to experience in the future.

Scholarship recipients will each receive $2,000 to cover travel and other costs associated with attending the conference. They will each also receive a ticket to AVETRA’s 2024 annual conference.

Through consultation between AVETRA and the scholarship recipients, additional opportunities for capability development may be created, such as:

Dedicated one-on-one meeting time at the conference with a leading researcher, AVETRA member or conference speaker

Opportunity to participate in a panel discussion at a future AVETRA conference

Support in preparing an abstract for a future AVETRA conference

The preparation of a short reflective piece on the conference for a future edition of the AVETRA magazine, Research Today.

Funds will be paid as an up-front lump sum and scholarship recipients will be responsible for making their own travel and accommodation bookings.

Call for Abstracts are now open for the 2024 AVETRA conference being held on the 3 & 4th October at the Aerial UTC Function Centre, University of Technology, Broadway in Sydney.

This years theme: Impetus and Impact: Research that Challenges and Shapes VET Policy and Practice.

Abstract submissions close on 24th June 2024.

New NCVER Managing Director | Mr John King

The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) today announced the appointment of its new Managing Director, Mr John King.

The Chair of the NCVER Board, Dr Ruth Shean AO, stated, 'The Board is delighted to announce that from July 2024 Mr John King will become the next Managing Director of NCVER.'

'John brings extensive experience and a deep understanding of the VET sector through his senior roles in both the Victorian and South Australian governments. John also has an extensive background in data analytics and research including through his recent role as Chief Data Officer at Seer Data and Analytics for the last 12 months.

The Board considers John’s experience and knowledge in policy and data as key attributes to leading the company in support of the new National Skills Agreement, with its focus on enhancing VET data and evidence.
